"What's wrong?" My heart was climbing to my throat. I didn't like the sound in her voice. It scared me.

"Two others aren't here. What could have happened to them?" Mom looked a little pale.

"Did you put them someplace else?" I asked. But I knew she hadn't.

She shook her head and looked in the box again. "Where are they?" She stood up suddenly. "What about the ones you've been separating? Is everything there?"

I was afraid to look. Each hundred years had its own box. The first one was 1500. It was empty. I looked through the other boxes. "I think some others are missing, too." My hands were shaking now.

Mom sat down hard and covered her face. "What am I going to do? Valuable books in my care. And they are missing."
