“I won’t let you break my heart again,” she said quietly.

“I have no intention of breaking it,” he replied. “I just need you to know. I’m sorry for what happened. I’m really sorry. And after all that I’ve seen and done, you’re the only one I can’t get off my mind. You’re the only one I think about.”

His lips formed a tight line as he studied her face. He seemed to be doing some kind of coin toss, and she had no idea what to be ready for, or whether she would like either result. Without warning, he lurched forward, caught her head between both his hands, and pressed his mouth to hers.

She didn’t pull away, nor did she turn to the side. She didn’t have time. His mouth slammed against hers with so much force, she winced, but the hunger behind his kiss proved contagious, and before she could analyze anything else, she tilted her head and moved her lips against his.
