“Let’s go.” Maggie grabbed her arm and ran, not bothering to check Devon’s status. He seemed to be trying to take out every guard in there, rather than acquiring his asset as soon as he had an opening. Of course, if she hadn’t taken out three of them, maybe he wouldn’t have had an opening. He should thank her.
“Goddamnit, Maggie!”
Okay, maybe not thank her. His outraged roar followed her down the left side of the warehouse, back the way she’d come. She alternately urged Liana ahead of her and pushed her behind, unsure which was the safer position.
“Base, this is Skylark. We’re coming out the north exit.” The door had been locked, but she hoped it had a crash bar and wasn’t chained shut. It had been installed as an emergency exit, but the current owners of the warehouse, concentrating on the activities OSHA didn’t know about, might be more concerned with security than safety. She could hear the crackle of flame and knew Devon had set something on fire.
“Go!” She pushed Liana to run faster and sprinted past a towering shelf, then whirled, holding up her arms to direct as much air energy as she could gather. Her eyes widened when she saw a crowd of men pounding down the aisle behind Devon. She hesitated only an instant. He was a good guy. Kight Street and The Guild often cooperated against a variety of enemies. She couldn’t let him get killed or worse just because he’d horned in on her action.
She started counting his steps as he ran. He was about fifteen strides away. On ten, she heaved at the shelving. It teetered. On seven, she shoved. It rocked. Five more steps. With an escalating yell, she twisted and pushed, letting go of all the energy she’d gathered. Devon reached her just as the shelving and all its contents toppled onto the group. Not all would be hurt badly enough to stop them from chasing, but it would buy them time, she hoped.
“Well done,” Devon admired, his smooth British accent sliding down the back of her neck.
